There has been a family-run fish & chip shop on this site since 1937.
We are serious about the quality of our food, especially our traditional fish & chips, and everything is cooked to order.
We only use the best, freshest ingredients. Our fish is filleted, packed and frozen at sea within a few hours of being caught. That way the fish is as fresh as possible and retains its flavour. All our fish comes from sustainable sources and is supplied by Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) registered companies.
Chips are, whenever possible, produced from Maris Piper potatoes, as we believe these to be the best potato for chipping. Other varieties are used when Piper is unavailable and by working closely with our local potato merchant we ensure we have the best potato for the time of year.
Whenever possible we purchase in the Westcountry and with our suppliers' help have created a food and drinks menu comprising some of the best locally produced foods .
Originally the dining area was a wet fish shop, and if you look carefully at the wall on the stairs side of the restaurant you will see that there was a hatch where people paid for locally caught fish.
Local
We have a fantastic relationship with our suppliers, most of them local, so we can offer you the best possible products.
The south west is a goldmine of locally-produced food and drink and so we need look no further afield to source top-quality produce.
We buy fresh fish from a local fish merchant and from the fishermen on Budleigh beach.
Our mussels come from the River Exe, where they grow for an extra year in the river's safe waters, making them plump and tasty.
In addition we can now offer gluten-free batter. Please ask for details.
Our local supplier of fishcakes, whitebait and other tasty fish products sources its fish from Westcountry fishing ports, particularly Brixham and Newlyn, offering customers a wonderful taste of the West.
We make our own fish pies and fishcakes, and offer a selection of locally made pies, pasties and puddings, Westcountry sausages and ice cream.
We also sell locally brewed beer, lager, Devon ciders along with a range of quality wines.
Sustainable
We only buy fish from traceable sustainable sources, ensuring that fishing is managed, within quota and legal.
Controlled trawling ensures that a healthy population of fish can naturally reproduce and replenish stocks without over exploiting the resources.
All our suppliers are members of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), an independent organisation that oversees sustainability. The MSC blue tick is becoming more familiar with the consumer and can be awarded at any point in the supply chain.
Healthy
Fish & chips is more than just a meal, it is good for body and soul. Well-known agencies, such as Seafish, recommend that we should eat two portions of fish per week.
Studies have shown that seafood helps energy levels, boosts brainpower and concentration as well as helping with smooth, clearer skin, shiny hair and a general wellbeing.
Fish & chips is not the high calorie meal that many expect and it is low in salt compare to most other take-away meals.
After researching the calorific value of our cod meal, we estimate that it is only about 700 calories.
